It is believed that when the civilization started, since then yoga is being done. The history of yoga begins thousands of years ago, long before the birth of religion or faith. In Yoga history, Shiva is regarded as first Yogi or Adi Yogi and first Guru or Adi Guru. Several thousand years ago, on the banks of Kanti Sarovar lake in the Himalayas, Yogi provided his enlightened knowledge to his famous saptarishi (seven disciples). The Satpisis conveyed this powerful science of yoga in different parts of the world including Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and South America. Provisionally, the period between 500 BC – 800 AD is considered as the best period, which is also considered as the most fertile and important period in the history and development of yoga. Mahavira’s five great versus – the concept of elephant muga or eight paths by Panch Mahavrat and Buddha – can be considered as the initial nature of yoga meditation. We get a more clear explanation in Bhagwadgita, in which the concept of Gyan Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and Karma yoga is presented in detail. These three types of yoga are still the highest examples of human wisdom and today still people get peace by following the methods described in the Gita.
Although Yoga in India was a part of daily life in the pre-Vedic period, the prominent sage Maharishi Patanjali decodified & simplified the then prevailing Yogic practices and its significance and its correlated awareness, knowledge & skills through Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. Thereafter, many sages and Yoga gurus added greatly for the salvation and expansion of the yoga through documented application and works.
The yoga history period between 800 AD – 1700 AD is considered as a period of excellent period, in which Adi Shankaracharya, Ramanujacharya and Madhavacharya – were prominent.

Types of Yoga
